CONGRESS THEME : PSYCHOSOCIAL
REHABILITATION ONE WORLD: QUEST FOR
INTEGRATION |
| |
The
Tree of Life has been an important symbol across culturesover time.
From the Egyptians to the Mayans to the Nordic and the Celtic and
through Judaic, Christian and Islamic mythology the Tree occupies
a prominent place. The World Tree or Holy Tree is a symbol of the
Mother involved in the creation of the universe. Under the Bodhi
Tree the Buddha attained enlightenment and the Indian fig tree has
important religio-spiritual significance. From the perspective of
depth psychology the Tree is seen as a powerfull symbol of growth
It is also a symbol of the true Self. With growth and development, a more mature personality develops and like the tree showers the world with a bounty of flower and fruit of knowledge and experience. The concept of the Tree of Life encompassing the body, psyche and spirit woven into different cultures seems to echo the Vedantic dictum- 'Ekam sath, viprah bahudah vadanti' - 'The truth is one, people call it by different names.'
With this shared world view we attempt an integration- of peoples and knowledge from across the globe. The ultimate objective is to achieve a homeostasis for the patient within himself and with society at large. The clasped hands motif of the leaves of the Tree of Life symbolize the " Quest for Integration."
